Independent Artist Spotlight: Angel Resto
Trackstarz connected with Christian hip-hop artist Angel Resto to learn more about his musical journey, influences, faith, ministry, and what listeners can expect from him next.
Can you tell us who you are, how long you’ve been doing music, and what style of music you create?
My name is Angel Resto. I was born and raised in Rochester, New York, but I now live in Central Florida. I’ve been creating music for approximately nine years. I make music that I believe is biblical but also relatable to everyday life.
Who are some artists who have influenced your sound, whether mainstream or Christian?
On the Christian side, Lecrae is number one on my list because he transcended Christian hip-hop and helped me understand how to connect with people through a biblical worldview.
The Cross Movement was the first Christian rap group I really got into. In my opinion, they helped elevate the production and lyricism within Christian hip-hop, and they are the fathers of lyrical theology.
I also respect Sho Baraka for bringing Afrocentricity into Christian hip-hop. KB is very solid and confident in who he is as a Christian hip-hop artist. I also have to recognize DA’ T.R.U.T.H. and Flame for their contributions to the genre.
On the mainstream side, I’m definitely a Tupac fan. He was an avid reader and a revolutionary thinker, so he had many layers as an artist. Nas is a lyrical poet whom I’ve always respected and admired.
LL Cool J is another great emcee I respect. The style and confidence he displayed in the 1980s—with the Kangol hat and matching Jordans—was fire. I also respect Eminem because he may be the most technically skilled emcee ever. You have to give him credit for that. Lastly, The Notorious B.I.G. was a great punchline rapper with an incredibly slick delivery.
When people hear your music, what do you think they receive from listening to it?
When people hear my music, they’re going to get good beats and good vibes, but they’ll also hear a meaningful message that can resonate with their spirit.
My music is designed to plant seeds. I want to plant good seeds that can lead to life-changing moments.
What is your perspective on the music industry today, and what makes your music stand out?
Trap, drill, Jersey club, and Afrobeats are some of the most popular sounds in today’s music industry.
I believe my music stands out because of the content I discuss and the biblical perspective I bring to different subjects. I address topics such as success and anger while examining them through a biblical lens.
What is one misconception about God that bothers you the most when you hear people say it?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that God can’t use rap music to minister to or bring healing to someone.
I believe God can use anything for His glory, as long as you’re willing to be used by Him.
When did you come to know Christ personally, and what testimony has He given you?
I came to know Christ on January 1, 2003. At the time, I was seeking God and trying to determine whether the Bible or the Quran was true. During that search, God showed me that the Bible was true.
What are you currently doing beyond music to serve in ministry?
I volunteer at my home church and assist with the children’s ministry.
What can people look forward to from you next?
Be on the lookout for a book that I’m currently revising and plan to release next year. I also plan to release a new song in 2027.

That’s an interesting question! So far, I haven’t experienced anything too far outside the ordinary during my musical journey.
