Written Album Review | Troy Patterson | Bear’s Dad

Troy Patterson – Bear’s Dad

About a year ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Troy Patterson through the Independent Artist Spotlight, and even then it was clear he was an artist with a unique voice and a clear sense of purpose. Fast forward to now, and Bear’s Dad feels like the full realization of that vision.

From the moment you press play, this project makes one thing clear—Troy Patterson isn’t just creating music, he’s crafting an experience.

Sonically, Bear’s Dad stands in a lane of its own. If anything, this project feels like it deserves its own genre—Eclectic Hip Hop. There’s a refreshing unpredictability in how the sounds come together, blending styles and influences in a way that keeps the listener engaged without ever feeling scattered. It’s cohesive, but never boxed in.

There’s also a strong sense of 90’s nostalgia woven throughout the project—something that brings you back to a simpler time in music. A time when songs left you with a feeling… an emotion. This isn’t just music made for playlists where tracks are skipped through or quickly replaced by the next algorithm-driven record. Bear’s Dad invites you to sit with it, to feel it, and to actually experience what’s being said.

The production throughout the album feels intentional and well-curated, giving Troy the space to fully express himself while maintaining a strong sonic identity. There’s a level of creativity here that pushes beyond trends and leans into originality—something that’s becoming increasingly rare.

But what truly elevates this project is the message.

Troy Patterson brings a level of authenticity and maturity that resonates. Themes of growth, responsibility, and purpose are woven throughout the album in a way that feels both personal and relatable. This isn’t just music for the moment—it’s music with meaning, reflecting real-life experiences and a grounded perspective.

Standout moments on the project include “Fears,” “On Me,” and “Creating Something.” Each of these records highlights a different dimension of Troy’s artistry—whether it’s vulnerability, confidence, or creative vision. “Creating Something” ultimately stands out as a favorite, capturing a deeper truth—that in many ways, that’s the objective of our lives. We’re always creating something, whether it’s legacy, impact, or purpose. That message lands in a way that sticks with you.

Tracks like “Chapstick” and “Bumblebee” also bring a lot of personality and creativity to the project. For me personally, the hooks didn’t quite connect as strongly as some of the other records—but that’s more about preference than anything else. And to be clear, I’m not coming from the perspective of a music critic whose opinion should shape an artist’s direction. I just tend to gravitate toward hooks that immediately pull me in, and that’s always been a big part of how I experience music as a listener.

What stands out most is how natural it all feels. Nothing comes across as forced. Every track contributes to a bigger picture, making Bear’s Dad feel like a complete and intentional body of work.

At Trackstarz, we always highlight artists who move with purpose—and this project is a strong example of what that looks like when creativity and conviction meet.  Bear’s Dad is a standout project that showcases Troy Patterson’s originality, growth, and willingness to step outside the box. With its unique sound, nostalgic feel, and meaningful content, this is more than just an album—it’s an experience. If you’re looking for something fresh, authentic, and purpose-driven, this is definitely worth the listen.
